Pirapozinho was founded in 1949, as the Sorocabana Railway drove settlement deeper into the Alta Sorocabana region. The town emerged during a period of rapid expansion in western São Paulo, when new communities were forming around Presidente Prudente and the coffee industry was spreading across the region.

The name Pirapozinho comes from Tupi-Guarani and refers to a “place abundant in jumping fish,” reflecting the many rivers and streams that flow through the Paranapanema River basin, including the Santo Anastácio and do Peixe rivers.

From the 1930s onward, Pirapozinho grew as new areas were opened for settlement, bringing new streets, businesses, and farms to the town. Today, the town sits amid a predominantly rural landscape.

Coffee and, later, cotton shaped the local economy in its early years. Today, Pirapozinho has a diversified economy supported by commerce and agriculture, with sweet potatoes, soybeans, cassava, peanuts, and banana plantations extending into the surrounding countryside and helping shape its identity in the interior of São Paulo State.

The São João Batista Parish Church is one of Pirapozinho’s most prominent landmarks. Founded in 1946, the church was built in the Gothic style in the 1950s. Perched on higher ground, it is visible from across the town, with a symmetrical façade, rectilinear design, and a traditional interior that works particularly well for period and religious scenes.

In a more recent phase of urban development, the Rosa Vantini Martinez Cultural Center opened in 2010 and occupies approximately 470 square meters. It comprises two spaces: the 164-seat Vereador Frederico Braghin Auditorium, with two dressing rooms, and the Professora Aparecida Grizani Multicultural Gallery. The two venues offer versatile spaces for audiovisual productions.

The Pirapozinho Tartaruguito Fossil Site lies along the former Sorocabana Railway route and offers a landscape unlike any of Pirapozinho’s urban locations. Fossils from the Paraná Basin have been preserved here, including Cretaceous species such as Bauruemys elegans, a prehistoric turtle. The site’s combination of natural surroundings and geological history makes it a distinctive location for documentary and scientific productions.

Pirapozinho offers a varied mix of locations, from historic landmarks and cultural spaces to farmland and natural landscapes, giving productions plenty of options for different kinds of stories and productions.
