ABOUT Iguape
Founded in 1538, Iguape stands as one of Brazil’s first towns. Located on the southern coast of São Paulo, it was the site of the country’s first gold foundry, in the 17th century. With its remarkably preserved historical legacy and picturesque natural landscapes, Iguape offers a wealth of compelling filming locations. In the mid-19th century, it flourished as one of southeast Brazil’s wealthiest cities, its port bustling with agricultural exports and imported goods. However, a critical planning oversight led to the port’s silting, diverting all commercial activity to the city of Santos and causing Iguape’s rapid decline. Ironically, its residents’ misfortune ultimately safeguarded its invaluable historical heritage.
The Historic Center, listed as a national heritage site by Iphan (the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage), offers an immersive glimpse into the past. Its colonial mansions, with their colorful façades and Portuguese tiles, and its cobblestone streets hold centuries-old stories. The majestic Sobrado dos Toledos manor, with its intricate architectural details, epitomizes this rich heritage. Another highlight is the Basílica do Senhor Bom Jesus de Iguape e Nossa Senhora das Neves, a blend of neoclassical and baroque styles, which features stunning ceiling frescoes, Portuguese tilework, and altars embellished with silver and gold-plated details. The Igreja do Rosário church, with its ornate baroque façade and richly decorated interior, stands as yet another historical gem of Iguape.
In addition to the Historic Center, a key advantage is the area’s natural landscape, which spans the Atlantic Forest, the maritime coastline, and river systems.
The municipality is situated 226 kilometers from the city of São Paulo, the nearest point of access to airports that facilitate regional, national, and international travel. Providing infrastructure capable of supporting productions of varying scales, it offers a selection of modest yet hospitable hotels, as well as restaurants serving traditional culinary delicacies. The favorable warm climate, coupled with its proximity to major urban centers, renders the city a readily accessible destination all year round.
Fifteen kilometers away, there lies Ilha Comprida, renowned for its many beaches. Eighteen kilometers away, the Estação Ecológica da Jureia-Itatins boasts rich biodiversity and pristine landscapes. Finally, at eighty-two kilometers, Cananeia presents a wealth of historical architecture, including mansions, centuries-old churches, and charming cobblestone streets.
With a population of only thirty thousand residents, Iguape offers logistical advantages, including simplified street closures, and its integration of historical and natural elements provides remarkable scenic opportunities. It represents an optimal destination for producers seeking historical locations and streamlined project execution.
