Built in 1577, the church was originally designed as a fortress and features a colonial-era design with baroque influences. Its walls were made using locally sourced shell limestone and whale oil, the latter used to waterproof the structure against the effects of saltwater. Its simple façade features narrow slits in the walls that, in addition to serving as architectural elements, functioned as loopholes for shooting arrows in the event of an attack.
