Originally built as a chapel in 1873 on the site now occupied by the town square’s bandstand, the chapel was demolished and rebuilt as a church in 1882. The structure features a combination of classical architecture and Renaissance and baroque elements, drawing inspiration from the Italian church of Il Gesù, in Rome. Inaugurated as the only sanctuary in the Circuito das Águas Paulista, or São Paulo Spa Town Circuit, its main altar is entirely carved out of wood, while the other altars are sculpted in marble. The interior is lavishly decorated with paintings by Italian artist Domenico Rocco.
