Construction on this church began in 1792 and concluded in 1874, with a subsequent renovation in 1890. Inside, notable features include statues of the Senhora de Sant’Ana, the patron saint, and of São Miguel. One of the church’s most emblematic features is its 1.5-meter-tall bell, imported from Belgium, which rang out to mark historic events such as the end of the Paraguayan War, the signing of the law which led to the abolition of slavery by Princess Isabel, the end of the War of Canudos, and the end of World War II.
