This square dates back to the time of the Bandeirante expeditions, when 17th- and 18th-century settlers and frontiersmen, called Bandeirantes (literally: flag-carriers), from São Paulo, ventured into the Brazilian interior. Despite several urban transformations, the site now serves as a public plaza, which features a large cross as a reminder of that historical period.
